Suppose You’re surfing the web on your computer or a laptop and out of nowhere a advertisement starts playing in any of the open tabs. If you’re in the public, then this would attract a lot of attention towards you and probably embarrass you if the ad in not so appropriate. So how do you mute the tab from which the audio is being played?
Thanks to a new update, Google chrome now displays a speaker icon on any tab in which there are some audio elements. However the problem is until and unless you identify and mute the source of the audio, you don’t have any other option rather than closing the tab itself. Now if you have some really important stuff to read on that page, closing the tab is not a preferable option.
Though not available through the stable release of Google chrome, the Dev builds of Google chrome are now featuring a option to mute individual tabs. This is a feature that most of us have been waiting for, however there still a lot of time left until it is incorporated in the stable builds of Google Chrome.
Now if you would like to use this feature, here’s how you can mute individual tabs in the Dev or canary build of Google chrome.
As i said earlier, the mute feature is only available in the Dev and canary builds of Google chrome. you can download and install any of these build from the following links.
Download Chrome Canary
Once you’ve installed any of the above chrome builds, you can follow the instructions below to use the mute feature on Chrome.
How to Mute Individual Tabs on Google Chrome Dev and Canary Build
- Step 1: Type in chrome://flags/#enable-tab-audio-muting in the Omnibox.
- Step 2: Enable the Enable tab audio muting UI control option.
- Step 3: Restart Google Chrome.
That’s it, now you click on the speaker icon on any open tabs to mute them.
