If you browse the web regularly, you would have noticed that a lot of the websites that you visit today would request you to know about your location. While some websites genuinely need to determine your location in order to offer your their services properly, some don’t exactly need it.
Earlier, websites would use the IP address to determine your approximate location but with the HTML5 Geolocation API, web browsers can more accurately detect your location using data from GPS, Wi-Fi networks, cell towers, Bluetooth and the computer’s IP address. If you agree to share your location, the browser will send these details to Google Location Services for estimating your location which is then shared with the requesting website.
However if you don’t want to provide websites with your location data, you can go ahead and fake it instead. The developer tools in google chrome is where you can fiddle with the Geolocation settings. But the developer tools is not familiar tool for most chrome users and the same thing can be done through the help of an extension too.
Courtesy of Change Geolocation, you can now easily fake your location data from the extensions bar in chrome itself. Here’s how you can use the Change Geolocation extension to change the Geolocation data with ease.
Fake your Location on Google Chrome with Change GeoLocation
- Step 1: Download and install the Change Geolocation extension from the Chrome web store.
- Step 2: Once installed, the extension will appear in chrome’s extension bar in the form of an pin icon. Click on it and you can manually enter the latitude and longitudes data for up to four locations and save it.
- Step 3: Anytime you want to fake your location, you can select from the four locations presets available in the Change Geolocation extension and click on the on/off button to enable or disable the fake location data. Finally click on the Save button to save the new location.
This is as easy as it can get.
