How to use the PS4’s Dualshock 4 Controller on a Windows PC

H

The PS4’s Dualshock 4 controller is one of the best controllers for gaming but it’s a shame that it cannot be used on Windows or any other OS to play games. Microsoft on the other hand has been receiving much love from gamers because their Xbox controller can be used with a PC and all major games come with inbuilt support for the Xbox 360 controller.
The PS4’s Dualshock 4 controller is not officially supported by Windows, however there are third party tools for Windows, such as InputMapper which enables PS4 users to use the Dualshock 4 controller on a PC.
I have personally tried InputMapper to use the Dualshock 4 controller on my PC and it works great. The Dualshock 4 controller can be connected to a PC with either a USB cable or wirelessly via Bluetooth, but the latter is not recommended as it generally doesn’t work for most due to chipset errors.
For those who want to use their PS4’s Dualshock 4 controller with a PC, here’s how you can do so.

Tools Required

Before you proceed ahead, here are the two tools that you are require to be installed on Windows in order to use the DS4 controller with your PC. As InputMapper will be emulating the Xbox 360 controller, you will have to download and install the drivers for Xbox 360 controller.

  1. Download: Xbox 360 Controller drivers for Windows
  2. Download: InputMapper

How to use PS4’s Dualshock Controller on Windows with InputMapper

  • Step 1: Download and installed the two tools mentioned above.

  • Step 2: Once the tools have been installed, Run InputMapper and then connect the PS4’s Dualshock 4 controller with your PC using the USB cable provided with your PS4.

If everything is done correctly, the Dualshock 4 controller should be detected by InputMapper.

  • Step 3: Click on the PS4 controller icon to view the options. Click on Edit Settings to view or edit the key configuration of the Dualshock 4 controller.

That’s it, you can now use your DS4 controller. As a surprise, you can also use the Dualshock 4 controllers track bar to move the Windows cursor. Apart form the key settings, you can also change the configuration for the trackpad and the light bar too.

Last but not the least, InputMapper has to be run everytime you want to use your PS4’s dualshock 4 controller on a PC. So it will be better if you enable the Start with Windows option in Input mapper’s General settings.

  • Actually, I do recommend using Bluetooth. Obviously is not better than USB but, if you have patience, you can manage to make it work very smoothly 🙂

    • yup bluetooth is good too – if u have issues with wired then try bluetooth – just make sure that it’s bluetooth 2.1+, via adapter or built in pc (recommended) (Toshiba’s bluetooth & Bluetooth adapters using CSR currently does not work).
